Dan Wheldon
"What can you say? We're going to miss him. Everybody in IndyCar died a little today."
-- CHIP GANASSI, Wheldon's former car owner
Yesterday the IRL lost one of its greatest drivers. Dan Wheldon was the 2005 IRL Indy series champion; and he had won the Indianapolis 500 twice (2005 and 2011.)
Just 12 Laps into this particular race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a track they don’t normally run Indy cars at, two drivers tires touched, causing a chain reaction wreck with 15 drivers. British native Dan Wheldon was working his way up from the back of the pack; and was unable to slow his car down in time. His car launched off of the one in front of him, and was sent through the air as it caught fire. The drivers had talked about the dangers of this track; but none of them thought it would result in death. The drivers are all very aware of the danger that is possible while racing these open- wheeled vehicles. That however does not take away the shock or the pain felt by this tragedy.
Dan Wheldon left behind a wife and two young children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. There really are no words for a loss like this. Rest in peace Dan Wheldon. Godspeed.
